Xiangqi.com Rating System

Xiangqi.com’s rating system has been implemented using the widely used ELO rating system, named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. This system calculates the relative skill level of the players in a closed pool, meaning that the ELO rating of a player on Xiangqi.com is not an absolute measure of their Xiangqi skills, rather a relative measure of their skill as compared to the other players on Xiangqi.com.

This rating is a measure that may change depending on the outcome of every rated game played on Xiangqi.com: the winning player takes a certain number of points from the losing player. The total number of points gained or lost after a game depends on the difference of ratings between the two players. The higher the difference in rating, the greater number of points are exchanged when the game concludes.

In case of a draw, the lower rated player may also gain a few points from the higher rated player, to keep the system self-correcting. This means that in the long run, players with ratings too high or too low will be doing better or worse correspondingly until the rating reflects their true playing strength.

The Algorithm

Whenever a rated game concludes, Xiangqi.com calculates the new ratings of both the players in the game using the following formula:

These calculated ratings are then reflected all over Xiangqi.com
